Port Royal
Protecting Kingston Harbour, the 7th largest natural harbour in the world, Port Royal remains a town isolated from the main land. Sited 10 minutes drive from the airport (50 minutes from Strawberry Hill), there is a lot to see such as Fort Charles, St. Peter’s Church, Giddy house, various beaches and Lyme Cay. Upon entering Port Royal, St. Peter’s Church is to the left along with Fort Charles and Giddy house, while straight ahead lie the boats that take you to Lyme Cay, a small island 10 minutes boat ride away.
The drive along the Palisadoes to Port Royal is interesting as one sees Kingston, Mangrove swamps, beaches and cactus. Strangely, the wind swept Palisadoes is listed as an early banana plantation. Port Royal itself is a fishing community with most of the population involved in the business of fishing and tourism. Everyone is pleasant and the hiring of boats is easy. Fort Charles, St Peters and Lyme Cay is a full and interesting day out for all the family and can be easily arranged at Strawberry Hill with a driver and picnic.
