Island Outpost Unveils Villa Division

05/01/2005

From mountains’ majesty to tropical tranquility, Island Outpost’s new villas delight guests seeking a private holiday haven. Superbly appointed, each echoes the local culture. Lounge on a bamboo bed near a sunny Caribbean cove. Pluck fruit from a tree on a lush Jamaican hillside. Sip cocoa before a slate fireplace in the Rockies.

Above all, savor the impeccable style of Chris Blackwell, the villas’ owner. The Island Record founder helped launch Bob Marley, U2, Traffic, Cat Stevens, Traffic, Robert Palmer, Roxy Music and Melissa Etheridge, to name a few, Now he lavishes attention on luxurious properties in the Caribbean and beyond, and soon, more throughout the globe.

Conde Nast Traveler praised Island Outpost as “like a close-knit family of wildly attractive, intelligent and anarchic kids, they are utterly independent and quite impossible to separate from one another. But something they have all inherited is Blackwell’s easy charm, his amused and iconoclastic view of the world, his sense of fun and style, his instinct for beauty.”

This charismatic collection is expanding with villas in London and Nassau currently under consideration. As of spring 2005, Island Outpost welcomes guests to the following properties:

James Bond and balmy breezes, Ian Fleming Villa, Jamaica

Be shaken -- not stirred -- by the splendor of James Bond's birthplace. Dashing 007 originated at this 15-acre seaside hideaway, which blossomed around the home of Ian Fleming, who wrote 13 spy novels here. He delighted in the landscape's richness and praised "the blazing sunshine, natural beauty and the most healthy life I could live."

A true private home, the author’s retreat has three bedrooms with private indoor and outdoor bathrooms, including clawfoot bathtubs and shower platforms surrounded by bamboo fencing and tropical foliage. Batik fabrics, a cut-stone courtyard and fish-filled lily pond add exotic grace notes to the property, near the quiet village of Oracabessa. Sweeping vistas of the nearby reef and ocean unfurl at Goldeneye, Island Outpost’s adjacent boutique resort.

This extraordinary estate wraps around a completely private beach cove. The writer’s original desk -- a majestic chunk of Jamaican Blue Mahoe -- still presides inside, among the grand Indonesian furniture. White muslin drapes the bamboo canopy beds in this modernist structure, equipped with a cinema-sized theater screen. The minimalist design includes giant windows, sans glass, that frame the landscape.

The Ian Fleming Villa baseline rate for two people is $2,800 per night in low season (April 19–Dec 18) and $3,800 per night in high (Dec 19–April 18). Add $135 for each additional adult or $105 per child, per night. These sums include all food and beverages (except fine wine and champagne), plus unlimited use of the private beach, glass bottom boat, kayaks, sailboat, snorkeling and windsurfing equipment, and tennis court.

Romance and rugged beauty: Cuckoo’s Nest, Provo, Utah

With easy access to Sundance, this spectacular, five bedroom, tri-level villa nestles at 7,000 feet beside Mount Timpanogos . Designed by Blackwell, Cuckoo's Nest has floor-to-ceiling windows revealing ski runs and soaring mountains.

Rustic, but elegant, the property includes a stone fireplace, private balcony, steam shower, Jacuzzi and dressing room -- in the master-bedroom suite alone. Native American pieces and Island Records memorabilia enliven the rooms. Cedar doors open onto panoramic decks. The villa includes four slate fireplaces, office with internet access, indoor swimming pool with glass roof, an indoor sauna and billiard room with wet bar. This grand lodge accommodates a maximum of ten people. Rates range from $1,500 per night in the low season to $2,900 per night in the high season. Rates do not include 6% tax.

TLC and tropical lushness, Bolt House Estate, Jamaica

Surrounded by 50 acres of landscaped lawns, fruit trees and untouched tropical forest, Bolt House overlooks Port Maria's turquoise harbor. A one-bedroom cottage at Goldeneye augments this five-bedroom, private estate, where guests have access to the lagoon, as well as the James Bond Beach.

Butlers, housemaids, gardeners and other support staff ensure a carefree holiday. A car and driver are also available for outings. The owner's personal chef is renowned for her Jamaican, as well as Continental, dishes. Bolt House welcomes guests for a minimum stay of three nights. The main house costs $450 per person, the annex $350 each. Fancy a romantic getaway or extra measure of solitude? The minimum daily rental for two people runs $1,500.
