TRIATHLETE MAGAZINE SWIM SUIT ISSUE TO FEATURE TREASURE BEACH, JAMAICA

03/15/2007

JAKE'S OFF-ROAD TRIATHLON SET FOR APRIL 29, 2007

Treasure Beach, JAMAICA (March 15, 2007) - The 2007 Triathlete Magazine Swim Suit Issue (on newsstands May 2007) will feature Treasure Beach and St. Elizabeth's parish, which is also the site of the Caribbean's premier off-road triathlon: Jake's Jamaican Off-Road Triathlon, to be held on April 29, 2007.

Chosen because of its pristine physical beauty and triathlon history, Treasure Beach and St. Elizabeth parish proved a perfect venue for this coveted multi-sport media event (which had been hosted in prior years in Bali, Thailand and Moreea). "It was everything that we'd hoped.” said Triathlete Magazine publisher John Duke. "There were more fantastic places in this part of Jamaica to shoot than we had time for. We could have shot for another week. It will be our best issue to date."

"Jake's Jamaican Off-Road Triathlon” is the biggest event of the year in the secluded community of Treasure Beach and draws an enthusiastic and vocal local crowd for the race and its associated festival and parties.

The race features a 500 meter ocean swim, a 13.7 mile (25K) mountain bike and a 4.3 mile (7K) country run.

"It's always a wonderful event,” said Henzell. "The people in the community turn out to line the roads and cheer on the racers. It's a wonderful experience.” The race is the also chief donor to BREDS Treasure Beach Foundation, a local charity that helps the people of the small farming and fishing community of Treasure Beach. Past sponsors include Air Jamaica, Gatorade, Red Stripe, Island Car Rentals, Nike and The Jamaica Tourist Board.

Jake's Jamaican Off-Road Triathlon is known for having everything, including prizes, food and entertainment, come from the local area. Additionally, the field is strictly limited to 100 participants; 50 Jamaicans and 50 International. Despite the racing rivalry among the elite contestants, the feeling is very friendly and intimate among all of the participants, many of whom choose "Jake's Off-Road” as their first off-road experience. International athletes interested in participating may go to www.jakestri.active.com for registration and travel information.

Treasure Beach is nestled on the unspoiled southern coast of Jamaica, which boasts an memorable range of scenery, from beautiful coast and rolling farm country, to winding rivers and mangrove swamps, to mountains, waterfalls and the home of the Jamaican rum industry.

At Jake's, guests and locals mingle cheerfully at this bohemian resort, which celebrates the beachcomber lifestyle. Twenty-three units (with 29 rooms) commune with the garden, sea and sky, near a secluded fishing village. Moroccan domes and arches bloom. Decks skim the waves. Shells, beads and colored glass glitter brightly from walls. Eclectic and exotic. Elemental and eccentric. Sensual and secluded. Adjectives fly fast and thick about Jake's, a mid-range resort that won't install telephones and TVs, but boasts a world beat music library, yoga meditation room and, for guests who can't entirely unplug, complimentary Internet service. The resort's restaurant continues to be a rallying point for islanders and guests alike. Local excursions include trips to YS Falls, mountain biking, herbal steam baths, river tours and manatee watching. A trip wouldn't be complete without a visit to the 'Pelican Bar', dubbed the coolest bar in the Caribbean by those in the know.
